my wife is taking fish oil and then someone told us that there is vitamin E in most fish oil that one can buy. Can I ask what your thoughts on this are? Some say that cancer patients should stay away from vitamin E.

Hi! I saw you did the ketogenic diet for 3 weeks soon after you started the omega3/6 diet. Am i right in assuming you only did the ketogenic diet for those 3 weeks and not ongoing? Many thanks!

I am reading up on Omega3/6 on Nutrition Facts.org and getting an idea, but I was wondering if you could give me some ideas/suggestions on what you ate daily while on Omega 3/6 diet?

Some examples of your breakfasts, lunches and dinners would be really helpful to get me going.

Thank you for all of your knowledge and support! It is greatly appreciated!!!

Cashews nuts and immunotherapy

Hi,

I came across a very interesting poster at the recent ASCO meeting in Chicago. One poster looked at the gut and if there was any association between response to immune checkpoint therapy and what was found in the gut. The poster had the title:

Metagenomic shotgun sequencing to identify specific human gut microbes associated with immune checkpoint therapy efficacy in melanoma patients

And I have put it in this dropbox folder: https://www.dropbox.com/s/srrbmd5s5munkn9/Metagenomic%20shotgun%20sequen....

One of the most interesting things the researchers found was that anacardic acid seemed to be associated with immunotherapy response. And anacardic acid which is apparently found in cashew nuts. During the discussion about the poster, the lead author mentioned that all 15/15 cashew nut eaters in their sample had responded to immunotherapy. Among patients who did not eat cashews, the response rate was around 50%. A sound clip of the discusion can be found here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wqwvll784pw5f3v/Panel%20Discussion%20on%20Gut%...

I am wondering if you have any thoughts on this. Is this in line with your own thinking on omega 3 and omega 6?

Any thoughts you have on this would be very intereting to hear.

Kind regards,

Omega 3 dosages

Dear Rene and Edward,
I am from Sydney. My situation is, I had surgery to resect the T1 spinous process due to likely metastasis from primary lungs (synchronized bilateral NSCLC). It looks like a oligometastatic from my previous primary lung cancer, even though no cancer was detected elsewhere in the body via PET/MRI/CAT. I am waiting for the results of the molecular tissue analysis due hopefully next week plus the circulating tumor DNA blood test that is scheduled in 2 weeks that will be sent to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre.
I have started the Omega-3 regime of 30 mL per day of Concentrated Omega-3 triglycerides-fish, which comprise of the following:-
Concentrated Omega-3 triglycerides-fish (gram) 27.6
Equiv. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (gram) 12
Equiv. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (gram) 3.036
DHA+EPA (gram) 15.036
When I compared with 'Patient DH' dose, which is:-
15 gram of Omega-3
11.25 grams of DHA
3.75 grams of EPA.
DHA+EPA: 15 grams
Looks like my regime is pretty close to 'Patient DH". For me to adopt your regime of 24 g of EPA & 24 g DHA (total: 48 g of Concentrated Omega-3 triglycerides), I think I should double the current to 60 mL per day of Concentrated Omega-3 triglycerides-fish, which will bring it to:-
Concentrated Omega-3 triglycerides-fish (gram) 55.2
Equiv. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (gram) 24
Equiv. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (gram) 6.072
DHA+EPA (gram) 30.072.
I noted your DHA:EPA ratio is 1:1, whilst 'Patient DH" is 3:1 & mine is 3.95:1.
Would you kindly comment on the DHA:EPA ratio and my proposal to increase to 55.2 grams of Concentrated Omega-3 triglycerides-fish (gram).
Thank you so much for your help.
Raymond

Hi Rene and Edward,

We are considering implementing the "high omega 3 - low omega 6" concept that you describe in the book. My wife had one question: how did you take the amount of omega 3 that you ended up doing? Did you take capsules? Or just drank a lot of fish oil? Or something else? My wife is currently taking capsules, but we see she will need to take a lot of them to get to around 23 grams.

Also, did you do any blood tests or other monitoring to keep track of potential side effects (e.g. reduced blood clotting)?

Best,

Dear Rene and Edward,

I am reading about fish oil and I came across this study that got some publicity last year:

Increased Plasma Levels of Chemoresistance-Inducing Fatty Acid 16:4(n-3) After Consumption of Fish and Fish Oil
http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaoncology/article-abstract/2212208

Can I ask what your thoughts are on this? My wife is currently taking a targeted therapy (osimertinib) and she is also taking fish oil supplements. However, after reading your book, we are considering increasing the dose of fish oil significantly. I should mention she is currently also on immunotherapy.

I'm confused about fish oil & inflammation. I think fish oil suppress inflammation...but is that good if we're trying to get our immune systems working against cancer? Is inflammation the beginning of an immune response & therefore something possibly beneficial?

Olive Oil as a Salad Dressing

    Forums

Diet-based Immunotherapy *READ-ONLY* due to excessive spam

Q from AgreeableCoffee:
Hi, I read in the book about using olive oil as a salad dressing. I looked up its Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio and found that its around 13:1 (Self Nutrition Data). That would seem like a bad thing - too much Omega 6. What am I missing? Wouldn't it be better to just not have any dressing on your salad? Thanks

A: When I look at food items, I mainly focus on lowering the omega 6 content that I take because the omega 3 from most foods are negligible. I also don't look at the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 in individual foods, because the absolute amount of omega 6 is the most important. Most of the omega 3 will be from supplementation, not from diet.

I only look at the omega 3 to omega 6 ratio when I determine how much fish oil I need to take to counteract the omega 6 from my diet.

The entry on nutritiondata.self.com for olive oil is: http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fats-and-oils/509/2

In 1 Tablespoon olive oil, the Omega 3 content is 103mg (0.1g), the Omega 6 content is 1318mg (1.3g).

In comparison, soybean oil is a common base in many salad dressings (http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fats-and-oils/507/2).

In 1 Tablespoon soybean oil, the Omega 3 content is 917mg (0.9g), the Omega 6 content is 6807mg (6.8g).

Soybean oil has about 5 times more omega 6 than olive oil.

1) Olive oil is a good substitute for other common salad dressings, with only 1.3g omega 6 per tablespoon.
2) If you want to lower the omega 6 as low as possible, and can eat salads without any oil-based dressing, then yes, omitting olive oil would be ideal.
